Aswan is the southernmost city in Egypt and is a popular tourist destination along with Cairo. Here are 10 reasons to visit the city of Aswan in Egypt.
1. Philae Temple- These temples are located on an island in the Nile River and boast architectural ruins from the times of the pharaohs.
2. Nile Cruise - A cruise on the Nile is most recommended to all tourists who visit Egypt and the Aswan region is an ideal place to arrange for one.
3. Gateway to Africa - For many centuries now, Aswan has been Egypt’s gateway to the rest of Africa and it is through this city that people entering from Africa and exiting Egypt to visit the other African countries pass.
4. Elephantine Island – The Elephantine Island is shaped like an elephant’s tusk from which it gets it name. This region boasts two nilometers and a museum which is full of artefacts dated from the pre-dynastic era.
5. Msques- The city of Aswan is famous for its large number of mosques, and Muslims from around the world visit this holy city. Non-Muslim travellers who visit the region will appreciate the unique architecture of these mosques.
6. Unfinished Obelisk - The Unfinished Obelisk is found in the Northern Quarry in Aswan and is believed to be a possible companion to the Lateran Obelisk, now located in Rome. The Obelisk was once the largest piece of stone that was handled, but was left incomplete and later abandoned when a crack was found on it.
7. Aswan Cultural Centre - The Aswan Cultural Centre, located in the heart of the city, will provide tourists and locals with an insight into the traditional dance and music of Egypt. The Nubian Museum is also worth a visit.
8. Shopping - The city of Aswan was previously the centre of trade in Egypt and even today, tourists will be able to find many ancient caravan paths that crisscross the city. Also, there are many bazaars and markets in the city and tourists will be able to get great bargains here.
9. Temple of Horus - This temple is one of the best preserved temples in all of Egypt, and is located in the town of Edfu, which is 60 kilometres North of Aswan.
10. Aswan High Dam- Built in the 1960s, the Aswan High Dam is reputed to be an engineering miracle. Over 360 feet tall and 11,000 feet long, this dam will provide tourists with spectacular views.
