Puerto Pollensa in Mallorca

October 15, 2009

Situated on the northern coast of Majorca, not far from the large bustling resort of Alcudia, is Puerto Pollensa, one of the prettiest places on the island. The resort is situated on the Bay of Pollensa with a backdrop of the Tramuntana Mountains. Puerto Pollensa is 65 kilometres from the airport and the transfer time is approximately 1.5 hours.

Statistics show that more visitors return to Puerto Pollensa than any other holiday destination in Europe. It can be described as a quality destination; far removed from the mass market commercialism of some other resorts on the island of Mallorca. The resort is popular with visitors of all ages but tends to appeal to families and couples that want to spend a great Mallorca holiday.

Holidays here are very relaxing, but there are still a wide range of activities that can be enjoyed such as walking, windsurfing, boat trips, cycling, bird watching, climbing and waterskiing. It is also very easy to get to other parts of the north coast from here, as the roads are excellent, so it is a good base for exploring. Car hire is available although there is a reliable bus service and local taxis.

There are quite a few shops and a weekly market every Wednesday so there are plenty of opportunities for shopaholics.

The beach is excellent, stretching for 3 kilometres around the Bay of Pollensa, because it is a sheltered bay, the water is calm and very inviting.

Puerto Pollensa has a wonderful array of restaurants, enough to ensure that you can certainly eat somewhere different every night. There is everything from Japanese to Swiss and of course Mallorcan cuisine - and surely something to please everyone regardless of taste or budget. Fish tends to feature quite prominently on the menu.

The resort has a lovely promenade known as the Pine Walk, which is an enjoyable place for an evening stroll (or “paseo”) after savouring dinner at one of the many restaurants. Close to this promenade you can find several Mallorca hotels.

The nightlife here is fairly sedate and is generally restricted to the hotels. There are quite a few bars, but for a more lively night out it is probably best to head over the bay to Alcudia. For a quiet drink under the stars, however, one of the bars in the main square of the town would be ideal.
