Driving in Canada

December 6, 2009

Getting into the car and driving to a new place is a very thrilling feeling. There is a lot of freedom associated with driving. The places that one can visit are limitless. Canada is a very beautiful and accommodating country that always welcomes visitors. However, there are many rules in place no matter where you visit. If you do not look them up first you could face an unfortunate scenario when you arrive at the border. Safety and national security is a hot issue for both Canada and the United States. Keep this in mind when you plan your trip so that you do not run into any road blocks.

Proper identification is absolutely essential when it comes to crossing any border to any country. When visiting Canada you must have proper picture identification with you. Recent changes to security require that you also have a passport, even if you are driving into Canada. You should have some kind of photo ID for every person that is inside your vehicle. This includes children so make sure to acquire this information before you head out on your trip. Keep this type of thing close at hand so that you do not lose it. Have it ready to present in case you are asked for it along the way.

There are many items that will not be allowed over the border into Canada. This kind of thing can change without notice so look up recent rule lists online before you leave. If you have anything with you that is not allowed into the country, you may have to dump it before you will be allowed to proceed. The best way to avoid this is to know the rules. By being informed you will be able to pick and choose items properly while packing for your trip.

Never leave home without having all of your insurance and registration information. It should be kept up to date at all times and renewed according to the scheduled date. Make sure that it will not expire while you are in Canada. All legal papers for your car should be accurate and not outdated. You certainly do not need to run into legal issues while trying to enjoy some time away from home.

At the border crossing you will likely be asked a series of questions. Do not make the mistake of thinking this is a time to be funny or comedic. It will be frowned upon. State honestly why you wish to travel to Canada. The process will be much faster if you get to the point. Be prepared to have everyone in the vehicle answer a few questions. It is standard procedure so do not take it as a personal affront.

Certain border crossings can have long wait lines. This is something you can look into in advance. Check online for average border wait times. There are many places to cross and the one nearest to you may not be the fastest. Driving in Canada is a great experience, one that the entire family will love. Do it right so that you can keep moving without delay.
